Buenos Aires deyince aklınıza ilk gelen muhtemelen renkli evleri ve tango gösterileri. Evet, durum biraz öyle diyebiliriz ama size gösterilmeyen başka bir yüzü de var. Meşhur olmayan ama bana göre daha önemli olan bu yüzünü de sizinle paylaşmak istiyorum.
Öncelikle biraz ekonomik durumdan bahsedeceğim. Konuştuğum Arjantinli’lerin bir çoğu değişen hükümet yüzünden ülkenin daha da pahalı bir yer olduğuna değindiler. Fiyatları İstanbul’la kıyasladığımda hemen hemen aynı diyebilirim. Ama öğrendiğime göre burası önceden çok daha ucuz bir ülkeymiş. Diğer yandan iş bulmanın her geçen gün daha da zorlaştığını ilettiler.
Pazartesi günü Couchsurfing’ten bulduğum Yoga dersi etkinliğine gitmek için metroya (metroya subte diyorlar) bindim ve meşhur Plaza de Mayo‘da inerek etkinliğin yapılacağı parka ilerledim. Yoga dersinin olduğu park, Buenos Aires’in gökdelenlerinin, ofislerin ve rezidansların bulunduğu bir bölgedeydi.
Plaza de Mayo’da ise oldukça büyük bir protesto vardı. Hem bireysel olarak gelen hem de sendikaların geldiği büyük bir protestoydu bu. Fotoğraflarda gördüğünüz üzere Gezi Parkı kadar bir alana yayılmışlardı.
İlgimi çeken ilk şey polislerin vatandaşlara saldırmaması, aksine etraflarında barikat oluşturarak bu barikatın dışında bekliyor olmalarıydı. Ayrıca parkın içinde Başbakana yönelik çizimlerin ve yazıların da olduğunu belirtmek isterim. Bir kez daha protesto hakkını kullanabilen bu insanlar adına sevindim. Daha sonra ev sahibimden öğrendiğim üzere protestoya gidenlerin bir çoğu üniversite hocalarıymış. Kendilerine birkaç senedir maaş zammı yapılmadığı için sokaklardalar. Anlaşılan protesto birkaç gündür de devam ediyor. Çünkü üniversitede okuyan ev sahibimin sınavları protesto yüzünden ertelenmiş.
Ertesi gün San Telmo ve La Boca bölgesini ziyaret etmek istedim. Tek başıma gitmek istemediğim için Couchsurfing’in Hangout özelliğinden bir gezgin ile tanıştım ve onunla gitmeye karar verdik. Kendisi İspanya’nın Bask bölgesinden. Buraya okumaya ve çalışmaya gelmiş. İlginç bir şekilde Arjantin’de yaşayan bir sürü Avrupalı var ☺️
Yine Plaza de Mayo’da buluşup San Telmo’ya yürümeye karar verdik. San Telmo’nun şehrin daha modern yüzü olduğunu duymuştum. Ama ne var ki gittiğimizde ekstradan bir özelliği olan bir yermiş gibi gelmedi bana. Palermo nasılsa burası da öyle. Hatta daha az barın olduğunu düşündüm. La Plaza Armenia’nın olduğu bölge bana daha canlı gelmişti. Biraz hayal kırıklığına uğradım doğrusu. Daha sonra ev sahibime sorduğumda San Telmo’nun akşamları çok renkli olduğunu söyledi. Yanlış zamanlamadan kaybettik sanırım 😁
San Telmo’dan La Boca’ya yürümeye karar verdik. Aslında mesafe olarak yakın sayılmaz. Ayrıca yürüdüğünüz bölge kenar mahalle olduğu için pek güvenli değil. Ama gerçek bir turist olarak neden yürümeyelim ki diye düşündük. Ben “Kapalıçarşı çocuğuyum bana bir şey olmaz” diye gaza gelmiş olabilirim. Bask kız neyine güvendi bilmiyorum ama 😁
Şaka bir yana aşırı kötü bir muhit değil ama yine de telefonunuzu saklayıp sırt çantanızı önünüze alarak yürümeniz daha iyi olur. Bir de size laf atan erkeklere kulak asmazsanız sıkıntı yok. Bence bir Türk olarak böyle yerlerde bir Norveçliye göre 1 – 0 öndeyiz.
La Boca’ya doğru yürürken Boca Juniors‘ın stadyumunun önünden geçtik. Buenos Aires’in önemli takımlarından biri Boca Juniors. Halkın daha alt kesimini temsil ediyorlar. Buenos Aires’in diğer takımı River Plate ile de azılı rakipler. Bizim Galatasaray Fenerbahçe çekişmesi gibi.
Stadyumdan devam ettiğinizde yavaş yavaş semte girmiş oluyorsunuz. Biz turistik alana geçene kadar semti boydan boya geçmiş olduk. Mahallenin delikanlıları sağ olsun yine laf atarak bizi karşıladı. Semtin evlerinin birçoğu yıkık dökük. Halkın oldukça fakir olduğunu görebilirsiniz burada. Hatta kendinizi bir an Sulukule’de yürüyor gibi hissedebilirsiniz. Buralardan geçerken çantama sıkı sıkı sarıldım.
Burada bazı evler gerçekten rengarenk boyalı. Çamaşırlar sokak aralarına asılmış. Yollar futbol oynayan çocuklarla dolu. Ayrıca duvarlarda sürekli Maradona ve Messi’nin resimlerini görüyorsunuz. Futbola aşırı bağlılar ve oyuncularıyla gurur duyuyorlar. Tabii ki de Che’yi de burada aşırı sahipleniyorlar.
Korku dolu anlardan sonra Caminito’ya yani La Boca’nın turistik sokağına çıktık. Minicik bir sokak Caminito. Zaten türkçeye çevirisi de sokakcık demek. Yan yana sıralı restoranları var ve her restoranda müşterileri için tango gösterileri var. La Boca’nın özünden çok ayrı, sadece turistler için yapılmış yapay bir yer. Gidip görülmesi gerek tabii ki de. Ama semtte biraz dolaşmaya cesaret ederseniz gerçek La Boca’yı görmüş olursunuz. Tabii bir de güzel Instagram fotoğrafları için harika bir yer Caminito.
Sizi sıkmadan kısaca renkli evlerin tarihini anlatmak isterim. Buenos Aires, 1800’lü yıllarda İtalya’nın Cenova şehrinden oldukça göç alıyor ve gelenler La Boca’ya yerleşiyor. Gelen göçmenlerin çoğu da gemi yapımında çalışmakta. Çok fakir olduklarından dolayı kendilerine ev yapmak için malzeme alamıyorlar ve tersanede artan gemi yapımı malzemeleri ile ev yapıyorlar. Evleri boyamak için de yine artan gemi boyalarını kullanıyorlar. Ne var ki artık boyalar tüm evi boyamaya yetmiyor. Bu yüzden farklı renkleri kullanarak evlerini boyamak zorunda kalıyorlar. Böylece gelenekselleşen La Boca’nın evleri ortaya çıkıyor. Yani canım turistlerin düşündüğü gibi otantiklikten değil fakirlikten çıkan bir gelenek.
Biz de havalı fotoğraflar çekildikten sonra biraz oturup yemek yedik. O kadar yol yürüdükten sonra epey acıkıp yorulmuştuk. Burada yemek bulurken çok zorlanıyorum. Çünkü her şeyin içinde et var. Pizza veya peynirli empanada yapan yer bulursam gözlerinden kalpler çıkıyor 😍
Akşam olmaya başladığı ve yüz tane Arjantinli tarafından bana “Sakın kız başına geceye kalma orada” dendiği için evlerimize de otobüslere binerek geri döndük.
Yarın Uruguay’a doğru yol alıyorum. Bu yüzden çanta hazırlığıma başladım. Ama öncesinde La Boca yazımı hemen sizinle paylaşmak istedim. Biraz hazırlıksız yakalandım ama neyse ki bloğumu bir kurdele ile süsleyebildim 🎀
Once I mention Buenos Aires, you probably think about the colorful houses and tango shows. Yeah, it is like that. But it has another face they don’t show you. So I want to share my experiences about it.
First, I want to talk a little about the economy. Argentinians that I talk with told me after the elections, the country became more expensive. I can say it is almost the same as Istanbul. But I learned it was a cheaper country before. On the other hand, they told me it’s hard to find a job nowadays for young people.
On Monday, I took the metro (here it’s called subtle) to go to a free yoga class which I found on Couchsurfing. I took off in Plaza de Mayo and had to pass it to go to the park where the yoga class will be. The neighborhood of the park where we met is a modern side of the city. There are a lot of skyscrapers, offices, and residencies for rich people.
Meanwhile, in Plaza de Mayo, there was a big protest. There were citizens and unions as well. It was spread over a large area, as seen in the photos.
The first thing that caught my attention is the police weren’t attacking people. (Well, hello! I am from Istanbul, and I can get surprised by this easily ☺️). They had built barricades and were waiting outside of it, although there were comics against to president in the park. Later I learned from my host, the people were generally professors from universities. They were protesting that they cannot get a promotion in salary for a while. The protest must have lasted a while. Because the exams of my host had been postponed because of it.
After the day, I wanted to visit San Telmo and La Boca. But I didn’t want to go there alone. So I found myself a friend from Couchsurfing Hangout. She was from the Basque Country and came here to study and work. Actually, there are a lot of people coming from Europe and settling here.
Again we met in Plaza de Mayo and decided to walk to San Telmo. I heard that San Telmo is a modern neighborhood of Buenos Aires. But when we arrived there, it didn’t seem to me as a special place. It is similar to Palermo. Even it was like it has fewer bars and restaurants in there. I found La Plaza Armenia more colorful. When I said to my host, he said it’s more fun at night. Because there are a lot of bars and restaurants where you can listen to music etc. Well, it was bad timing, I guess 😁
We decided to walk to La Boca from San Telmo as well. Okay, they are not close to each other. But we are tourists, right? So we have to do silly things! In fact, La Boca is not a safe place to walk around. But I guess I was brave. Because I am a Turkish girl and have experience. Well, I don’t know why my companion was brave though ☺️
I am exaggerating. It is not that bad. You just have to keep eye on your cell phone and your bag. And you shouldn’t listen to the guy who is telling you some stuff on the streets. I just feel a little luckier as a Turkish girl. Because my hometown is not as safe as Norway 😌
While walking to La Boca, we passed the stadium of Boca Juniors. It is an important team in Buenos Aires. It represents the sub-class. The other important team is River Plate. Of course, they are the worst enemies!
If you keep walking, you’ll enter the neighborhood. You can easily see here the people of La Boca are quite poor. The houses are tumbledown. I grabbed my bag firmly whilst passing through here.
Some of the houses were really colorful in the neighborhood. They hang their clothes on the street. There were a lot of children outside playing football. Also, you can see Messi and Maradona on the walls. They really care about their football players. Of course, they love Che Guevara also.
After fearful moments, we arrived at Caminito, the famous street of La Boca. It is a little street as you can understand from its name (El Caminito means Little Street). On El Caminito, there are a lot of colorful houses and restaurants where they have tango shows for their clients. It’s just a tourist and artificial street made for tourists apart from the original La Boca. Of course, it must be visited. But if you’re brave enough to go into the neighborhood, you’ll see the real La Boca. Otherwise, you can just take photos here which will get lots of likes on Instagram.
I want to talk about the history of La Boca briefly. La Boca is where the poor immigrant dock workers used to live with many of its early settlers being from the Italian city of Genoa, way back in the 1800s. They painted those houses with cast-away leftover paint. But they never had enough paint of the same color to cover an entire house, so the houses became colorful patchwork. So it is not an authentic tradition. The colorful houses have a sad little history.
After we took some fancy photos here, we went to a restaurant to eat. After walking so far, we got so hungry and tired. It’s really hard to find something to eat for me here. They are using meat a lot in their meals. If I can find somewhere who make pizza or empanadas with cheese, I am making this face to them: 😍
After we ate, we took a bus to go back. Because millions of Argentinians told me not to stay in La Boca till the night as a female.
Tomorrow I am going to Uruguay. So I have to prepare my backpack and say goodbye to Buenos Aires with a glass of wine 🍷
