Santiago… Nereden başlasam bilemiyorum. İyi kötü tam bir ayımı bu şehirde geçirdim. Başından sonuna inanılmaz güzel bir deneyimdi. Şilililere sorarsanız hepsi Santiago’da çok insan olduğundan yakınır, kimsenin kimseye selam vermediğinden. Ama tüm büyük şehirlerin kaçınılmaz sonudur bu. Bense şehir insanı olduğumdan Santiago’yu ayrı sevdim. İki gün sonra çöle kamp kurmaya gideceğim. Dağ bayır da seviyorum ama müzenin, tiyatronun olmadığı yerde yaşayamıyorum.
Santiago’ya ayak basışımın ilk günü Meze Restoran’a görüşmeye gittim. Çocukluk arkadaşım burada yaşadığı için ben daha şehre gelmeden kısa dönemlik burada çalışmama aracı olmuştu. Meze Restoran, iki buçuk senedir Manuel Montt’ta türk yemekleri servis ediyor. Hünkar Beğendi’den tutun da Adana Kebap’a kadar her şey var. Hem Santiago’lulara kendini sevdirmiş hem burada yaşayan türklerin uğrak yeri olmayı başarmış. O yüzden burada yaşayan türklerin çoğu restoran sayesinde birbirini tanıyor.
Görüşmemizden iki gün sonra çalışmaya başlayarak hızlı bir tempoya girdim. Restoranda çalışmış olanlar beni anlayacaktır. Garsonluk yapmak dünyanın en garip işi. Her gün denk geldiğiniz garip insanlar, yaşanan diyaloglar ile ayrı bir kitap yazılır.
Restoranda çalışan tek türk garson olarak bir ay boyunca oldukça ilgi çektim. Hem müşteriler önerilerime daha da ilgi gösteriyordu hem de ülkemle ilgili bir sürü soru alıyordum. Şilililerin hepsi çok canayakın yabancılara karşı. Yine türk dizilerinin aşırı muhabbeti döndü. Sürekli dizilerle ilgili soru cevaplamak zorunda kaldım. Bir keresinde türkçe öğrenmeye çalışan bir Şilili kızla muhabbet ettim, çay ikram ettim. Derken kız yehova şahitlerinden çıktı. Giderken bana bunu hediye etti. Okey 😒
Doğum günümde restoranın ortasında roman havası oynadım. 50 Şililinin hep bir ağızdan doğum günümü kutlamasını dinledim. Her günüm deli dolu, acayip hikayelerle dolu geçti. Para kazanmanın yanında inanılmaz ve unutamayacağım deneyimler elde ettim.
Ama haftada altı gün uzun saatler çalıştığım için Santiago’yu uzun bir süre gezemedim. Bloğu boşlamamın sebebi de buydu aslında. Hiçbir şeye vakit bulamadım. Eve geldiğimde ya çok yorgundum ya da saat geç olduğu için direkt uyuyordum. Haftada bir gün iznimde de ev arkadaşlarım ile dışarı çıktığımız için tüm haftam bloke oluyordu. Son haftamda şehri tanımak için akşam vardiyasında çalışmayı talep ettim. Böylece birazdan anlatacağım yerleri gezme fırsatım oldu.
Şili deyince benim aklıma direkt Pablo Neruda geliyor. Dört sene ispanyol filolojisi okuyunca aklına başka bir şey gelmezdi insanın zaten. Bilmeyenler için Pablo Neruda hem siyasette aktif rol alarak Şili’ye katkıda bulunmuş hem de Nobel ödülü almış Şilili bir şair. Pablo Neruda’nın Şili’de üç tane evi bulunuyor. Biri Santiago’da, biri Vaparaíso’da, diğeri de Isla Negra’da. Ben iki tanesini ziyaret etme imkanı buldum. Santiago’daki evi La Chascona. Neruda, bu evin yapımına o zamanki gizli sevgilisi Matilde Urrutia için başlıyor. Üç evinde de görebileceğiniz gibi bu evde de ön plana çıkan deniz sevgisi. Neruda tam bir deniz aşığı olduğu için tüm evlerini gemiyi anımsatacak mimaride planlıyor ve içini deniz objeleriyle dolduruyor. Evi gezerken “vay be, ben de burada yaşasam efsane şiir yazardım” diyorsunuz. La Chascona, Bella Vista’da buluyor. Giriş ücreti ise 6000 Şili Pesosu. Maalesef pek ucuz değil. Ama değer mi? Değer.
Santiago’nun diğer bir önemli kültür merkezi ise adını bir diğer Nobel ödüllü şairi Gabriela Mistral’dan alıyor. Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral, hem birçok sanatsal aktivitelere ev sahipliği yapıyor hem de dönemlik sergileri içinde barındırıyor. Alan olarak çok büyük olan kültür merkezine giriş ücretsiz. Diğer yandan gençlerin dans, akrobasi gibi antremanları için kullanabilecekleri alanları mevcut. Ben ziyaret ettiğimde de dans eden bir sürü genç vardı. Santiago’da o gün yapacak hiçbir işiniz bile olmasa kitabınızı alıp kuytu bir köşesine kurulabilirsiniz. Herkese açık ücretsiz interneti de mevcut, kıps kıps 🤗
Santiago’nun en önemli simgesi ise iki tepesi. Birisi Cerro Santa Lucía, diğeri ise Cerro San Cristobal. Cerro Santa Lucía, aynı adı taşıyan metro durağının yanında. İçerisi heykellerle bezenmiş büyük bir park halinde. İçerisini gezmek yaklaşık bir saatinizi alıyor. Şehrin tam göbeğinde olmasına rağmen içeri adım attığınız an bir sessizlik başlıyor. Şehrin kalabalığından kaçmak için birebir.
Diğer tepesi San Cristobal ise şehrin simgesi büyük Meryem Ana heykeline ev sahipliği yapıyor. Tepeye çıkmasanız da bu heykeli şehrin her yerinden görebiliyorsunuz. Cerro San Cristobal’e çıkmak için birçok yol var. İsterseniz teleferikle, isterseniz bisikletle, isterseniz yürüyerek çıkabilirsiniz. Tepeye çıkmak için birkaç yol var. Zorluk seviyeleri değişiyor sadece. Kimisi daha dik, kimisi daha uzun ama daha rahat yol. Ayrıca yol üstünde de durup piknik yapabileceğiniz mesire yerleri bulunuyor. Biz teleferikle inip çıktık. Çünkü öğlen işe gitmem gerekiyordu. Sadece sabahtan uğrayabildim. Zirvede durup dinlenebileceğiniz kafe ve restoranlar da var.
Şili’de en yaygın fast food sandviççiler. Her adımda sandviç yapan bir yer var. Ama öyle aklınıza düz sandviç gelmesin. Burada olayı aşmışlar. Her porsiyon büyük boy. Bir hamburger istiyorsunuz iki elinizle zor tutup yiyiyorsunuz. Ayrıca her şeyin içinde avokado var. Resmen mutluluktan öliciim. Buranın domatesi gibi bir şey. Yemeyeni dövüyorlar. Diğer yaygın olay ise suşiciler. Neden bilmiyorum ama çeşit çeşit suşi yapan binlerce restoran var. Fiyat olarak da uygunlar. Yani bizde suşi lükstür. Burada sandviç de yesen aynı fiyat, suşi de. Ben zaten hem suşi hem de avokado manyağı olduğum için aşırılar aşırısı mutluydum burada. Arjantin’de peynirli empanada ve pizza yemekten içim kurumuştu.
Bunun dışında iki gün içimdeki Vedat Milör’e izin verdim ve değişik yemek arayışına çıktım ve harika iki yer keşfettim. Yolu düşen olursa diye de sizinle paylaşmak istiyorum.
Birisi hint yemekleri yapan New Horizon. Ben burayı tesadüfen TripAdvisor’da bulmuştum. Kesin vejerteryan yemekleri vardır diye gittim. Kapısında ayı gibi sıra vardı. Dedim noluyoruz ya? Demek ki cidden güzel diye 15 dakika sıra bekledim. Öğlen giderseniz günlük menüleri bulunuyor. Ana yemek, pilav ve salata bulunuyor menüde. Tereyağlı lavaş ekmeğine benzer bir ekmekle geliyor hepsi. Yemek için beklenir mi demeyin. Gerçekten inanılmaz güzeldi. İçecek de dahil hepsine 4000 Şili Pesosu ödedim. Yazarken tekrar canım çekti ahaha 🙃
Diğer Vedat Milör maceramda ise her şeyin doğal ve sebzeden yapıldığı bir restoran keşfettim. İçeride ete dair bir şey yok ama yine restoran full çekiyordu. Restoranın adı El Naturista. Her vejeteryanım dediğimde ay sen ne yiyorsun o zaman, aç kalmıyor musun diyenlerin suratına buranın menüsünü çarpmak istiyorum. Sıfır et koyarak dünyanın en leziz yemeklerini yapan bir yer. Ayrıca menüsü de oldukça geniş. Kocaman tabak ana yemek yedikten sonra, üstüne meyve salatası yedim. En sonunda yerimden kalkamıyordum. Şu boğazımı durduramıyorum ben ya. 😔 Bir de taze sıkılmış bir sürü meyve çeşitleri var. Giderseniz mutlaka deneyin.
Son olarak gece hayatı. Santiago’nun barlar sokağı Bella Vista. Hem barlara hem de gece kulüplerine burada rastlayabilirsiniz. Ama onun dışında her semtinde güzel mekanları mevcut. Benim arkadaşlarımın bir kısmı DJ olduğu için her hafta sonu onların partilerine gittim. Dolayısıyla mekan bilmiyorum. Ama Bella Vista’ya giderseniz mekan bulamamanız imkansız.
Birçok gezgin Santiago’da bir şey yok, ben sıkıldım diyecektir. Ama bir şehrin güzelliği sizin deneyiminizle doğru orantılı. Belki gidip bir hostelde kalsanız beğenmezsiniz şehri. Diğer şehirlerden hiçbir farkı yok belki. Hatta Santiago’yu yapay bile bulursunuz. Sağda soldaki büyük amerikanvari reklamları sizi iter. Gençlerin hepsinde dövme, rapçi şapkaları var diye düşünürsünüz. Tarzları garip gelir. Ama öyle günler yaşarsınız ki orası kalbinizde özel bir yer edinir. Santiago da benim için öyle. Çoğu sevmese de ben kalbimin bir kısmını burada bırakarak ayrıldım ve her zaman da güzel hatırlayacağım sabahları sıcak geceleri soğuk Santiago’mu.
Santiago… I don’t know where I can start to talk about it. I have lived there for a month! It was a totally wonderful experience for me. If you ask about Santiago to Chilean people, they will probably tell you it’s huge, nobody looks at your face, there are a lot of people, etc. But these are common problems of big cities. As I am a city person, I really love Santiago. After two days, I am going to camp in the Atacama Desert. I love to be in nature. But I cannot live in a place without theatre, museums, or concerts.
As soon as I arrived in Santiago, I went to Meze Restaurant to talk with the owner. Because my old friend lives there, he arranged for me a job in this Turkish restaurant before I arrived. Meze Restaurant serves Turkish cuisine for 2 and half years on Manuel Montt Street. You can taste a lot of traditional Turkish food here like Adana Kebap, and Hünkar Beğendi. And it is also a meeting place for Turkish people living in Santiago. Because of that, all Chilean-Turkish people know each other.
After I met the owner, I started to work in the restaurant as a waitress. If you have experience as a waiter, you’ll understand me. Being a waiter is one of the most interesting jobs. Everyday meeting with weird people, or funny conversations with the guests… I can write a book just with my one month of experience. As the only Turkish waitress in the restaurant, the guests got interested in me always. They asked me a lot of questions about my culture. Sometimes we talked about politics or Turkish soap operas. Once a Chilean girl came to the restaurant and said she tries to learn Turkish. She drank a cup of Turkish tea. Later she gifted me a Jehovah’s Witnesses book. I was like OKAY! 😒
On my birthday, I danced to traditional Turkish music at the restaurant. I watched that 50 Chilean was celebrating my birthday by singing. Every day had a different story and weird moments. I gained so many experiences apart from earning money.
But I was working 6 days a week and too many hours. So I couldn’t walk around in the city till my last week. That’s why I couldn’t write anything on my blog. I was coming home very late or very tired to do anything. I had just one off day. On these days, I was going out with my flatmates. So I asked to work on night shift for my last week. And I could walk around the city in my last week.
When I think about Chile, I think about Pablo Neruda directly. After studying Spanish Literature for 4 years, this is so normal. For dummies, Pablo Neruda was a poet who won Nobel Prize and was also very active in Chilean politics. Pablo Neruda had 3 houses in Chile. One is in Santiago. The other one is in Valparaiso. And the last one is in Isla Negra. I had a chance to visit two of them. His house in Santiago is called La Choscana. He built this house for his secret lover, Matilde Urrutia. Pablo Neruda was a real lover of the sea. Because of that, his three houses were designed as ships and decorated with objects related to the sea. While visiting the house, I thought that if I lived in that house, I could write perfect poems. La Choscana is in Bella Vista and the entrance fee is 6000 CLP. It is not so cheap. But it’s totally worth it.
The other important cultural center of Santiago has the name of another Nobel-prized poet, Gabriela Mistral. Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral hosts many art activities and temporal exhibitions. It is a huge building and the entrance is free. Also, it has saloons for dance for young people. When I was there, there were a lot of young people practicing. Even if you cannot find anything to do in Santiago, you can take your book and go there for a peaceful afternoon. And it has free wifi for visitors. 😉
The other important symbols of Santiago are its two hills: Cerro Santa Lucía and Cerro San Cristobal. Santa Lucía is near the metro station which has the same name as the hill. This hill is a huge park with a lot of artwork. It takes one hour to walk around in the park. As soon as you step inside, you leave the noisy city behind and hear the birds tweeting.
The other important hill San Cristobal can be seen from the city easily thanks to its huge Santa Maria statue. There are a lot of options to climb the hill. You can take a cable car which I did this one as I didn’t have so much time to climb it. You can climb on a bike or on foot. While climbing, you can see a lot of picnic areas which is a good option to relax for local people. On the other hand, there are a lot of places to eat or drink something on the top.
The most common fast food in Chile is sandwiches. There are a lot of diners in Santiago and they are making huge sandwiches at a reasonable price. And they use avocado for everything which makes me very very happy. And I don’t why. But there are a lot of sushi restaurants in Chile and the prices are the same as sandwiches. As a pescatarian, I could only eat empanadas in Argentina. But I gained some kilos in Chile ahaha 😊
Apart from that, I listened to my inner gourmet and I went out to discover new tastes in Santiago. I found 2 amazing places. I would like to share this with you. It can be helpful if someone comes to Santiago, too.
One of them is New Horizon which makes Indian food. I found this place on TripAdvisor. But when I arrived, there was a long line. I waited for a while to hunt a table. For lunch, they have a daily menu. It contains mail meal, rice, bread, and salad. I paid 4000 CLP including the drink. It was totally worth waiting for!
On my other gourmet adventure, I found a vegetarian-friendly place where all food was made with vegetables. I was about to ask for a copy of their menu to show people who ask me “Oh are you vegetarian? Aren’t you dying of hunger? What do you eat?” The name of the restaurant is El Naturalista. They have a lot of options that make you happy even if you’re a meat lover. After eating a huge meal, I ordered fruit salad, too. They have fresh juices as well. After eating so much, it was really hard to get up from the table. I just have to control myself! 😂
The last thing is the nightlife in Santiago. Actually, I don’t have any places in Santiago for that. Because some of my friends were DJs. So every weekend, I went to their parties. But Bella Vista is a neighborhood of pubs and clubs. If you go there, you can find something for sure.
If you ask the other travelers, they will tell you there is nothing to see in Santiago. But the beauty of a place depends on your experiences. If you stay in a hostel there, maybe you won’t like Santiago. You’ll say there are a lot of people there. There is no difference between Santiago and the other big cities. Maybe you can find it more artificial because of its huge billboards. You can find weird young people’s styles. But if you live so special experiences there, you’ll fall in love with Santiago. So Santiago is like that for me. I had so many beautiful memories there and it takes a special part in my heart. I will always remember it perfectly, my lovely Santiago.
